Tuition Tracker is an interactive tool designed to help parents and students find the “right” college or university among thousands by using search criteria, such as desired location, price and size, to filter results.

Tuition Tracker is also a resource for education researchers and journalists looking to explore trends in tuition, financial aid and student outcomes among U.S. higher education institutions over the last decade.

Tuition Tracker is the result of a collaboration among The Hechinger Report, The Dallas Morning News and the Education Writers Association.

Tuition Tracker is powered by data provided by the U.S. Department of Education from IPEDS, the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. The institutions analyzed are all U.S.-based, degree-granting colleges and universities that have first-time, full-time undergraduates. The 2008-09 to 2016-17 data releases were used to track and chart the following:

  • Published tuition and fees*
  • Average net price (by income level)**
  • Graduation rates (by race/ethnicity)
  • Retention rates
  • Financial aid (grants, including Pell, and federal loans)**
  • Enrollment (by race/ethnicity and gender)

*Preliminary 2017-18 data available
**Financial aid data available up to 2015-16

While most of the data comes directly from IPEDS, enrollment rate by race and ethnicity was calculated from raw IPEDS data on fall enrollment. Figures were calculated for Tuition Tracker since IPEDS data rounds enrollment rates to the nearest whole number.
